Overview
The devil is a part-timer ( Hataraku Maou-sama! ) is a comedy and fantasy anime based on light novels written by Satoshi Wagahara. The anime starts with The Demon Lord Satan trying to conquer the world of Ente Isla with his vast demon armies. But during his quest two of his generals die and the demon lord is confronted by The Hero Emilia and her companions. Knowing that he won’t be able to win at the moment Satan escapes Ente Isla with his general Alciel through a dimensional portal that exists in modern-day Sasazuka, Japan. Due to the lack of magic in this world, they are transformed into their human form and have to take on fake human identities to fit in. To survive, Satan takes a part-time job at a food chain called MgRonald’s and Alciel serves as his houseman. While working as a part-timer, Satan decides that he wants to become the ruler of Earth by climbing the corporate ladder starting from becoming the employee of the month. One day on his way to work Satan who now goes by Sadao Mao meets Emilia the hero who changed her identity to Emi Yusa. She starts following Sadao to find what his true intentions are but is surprised to see that he is living a simple and honest life. Soon unexplainable events start to surround them but at the same time, Emilia notices that Sadao is now not the Satan she knew and he is determined to save the human world. During the series, they are again and again faced with enemies from Ente Isla who they defeat together.
Review
The anime might seem serious at the start but eventually takes a comedic turn when the Demon Lord Satan arrives on Earth. The comedy is subtle and it is fun to watch how Satan, Lucifer and The hero adjust to the human world. The anime is light-hearted and will give you some good laughs here and there. It’s interesting to watch the characters being so powerful in their world but struggling to do simple human tasks on Earth. The hate between Satan and the hero turns into friendship and little by little they become comfortable hanging around each other without suspecting one another. Love the message that the anime conveys i.e. people can change. Satan changes himself for the better and rather than killing humans saves the world multiple times and uses his power for good. All the characters have some great comedy scenes and it’s fun to watch. I am sure you have not seen anywhere Satan being this dedicated to becoming ‘the employee of the month’. Though it is shown that a human colleague of Satan falls for him, I would like to see some love interest between Satan and the hero. But that is something we will have to wait to see in season 2 of The devil is a part-timer!! which is hopefully going to release in July 2022.
